📰 News we're reading

1. Tree breaks, comes crashing down in Bidwell Park on Friday (actionnewsnow.com) — A large tree suddenly snapped and crashed across a Bidwell Park path in Chico Friday afternoon, but quick warnings from a passerby kept everyone clear and unhurt. City of Chico staff arrived shortly afterward to assess the damage, and the Parks Department is expected to share more about what happened and any follow-up safety steps.

2. Beyond the field: Chico community shows up big for Panthers' win (actionnewsnow.com) — Chico High's home football opener brought a 34–21 win over Elk Grove and a big night for local boosters, vendors, and families at Panther Stadium. Fans snapped up Panther gear that funds Chico High athletics, while a new lemonade stand and strong community turnout helped create a lively, supportive atmosphere for the team's fresh start at home.

3. Youth with a Mission Chico holds dedication ceremony for new solar field (actionnewsnow.com) — Youth With A Mission Chico has dedicated a new solar field at its Richardson Springs campus, replacing a hydro system destroyed in the 2024 Park Fire. The project will cut PG&E dependence, lower long-term costs, and free up more resources for the organization's training and outreach work that brings visitors to the Chico area and sends them back out to serve worldwide.

4. State funding change leaves youth, LGBTQ+ programs in limbo (chicosol.org) — Chico-area groups like Stonewall Alliance Center and 6th Street Center for Youth are scrambling after Proposition 1 shifted state mental health dollars away from prevention programs in Butte County. Leaders say they're pursuing Medi-Cal billing, new grants, and community support to keep LGBTQ+ and homeless youth services operating in Chico and surrounding rural communities despite the loss of local control over funds.
