Actor Geena Davis Scheduled to Appear at Scripps

The Academy award winner will speak on gender equality.

Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis is scheduled to be a featured speaker at Scripps College in March.

Davis, known for her roles in the films “Thelma and Louise” and “A League of Their Own,” will speak on Gender Equality in the Modern Media at 7:30 p.m. on March 7 in Garrison Theater, a part of the Scripps College Performing Arts Center, 231 E. 10th St.

The event is free and open to the public.

Davis is chairwoman of the California Commission on the Status of Women, and serves as the Special Envoy for Women and Girls in the field of technology for the United Nations, according to bio information provided by Scripps University.

She is a partner with UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, in its efforts to change the way media represents women and girls globally, university officials wrote.

The actor founded of the non-profit The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and its programming arm See Jane, which encourages those who create content for children to correct that imbalance. Davis says of young girls viewing media, “If she can see it, she can be it,” officials said.
