Fresh & Easy Pulls Out of Peppertree Square Development Plan
The market chain recently informed the city that it would not be opening a store in the square.

Those hoping for an alternative choice for their grocery shopping in the Village might have to wait even longer after market chain Fresh & Easy recently informed the Claremont officials that it would not be opening a store in Peppertree Square.
Few details have been given about the reasons for Fresh & Easy's sudden departure; the chain had been in negotiations with the city for several years regarding a new store in the area.
According to City Manager Tony Ramos' weekly update, the store might have balked at renewed negotiations as "a result of several factors including the declining sales for their market."

The chain, owned by United-Kingdom-based Tesco, has been under pressure for several years, with sales dropping and reports that it would not even break even at the end of this financial year.
According to the manager's update, city officials had anticipated Fresh & Easy's departure, and have plans to incorporate two smaller grocery stores at the site. Meetings have been scheduled already to propose the opportunity to possible tenants.
