ULV's Campus Times Publication Honored

The University of La Verne’s Campus Times has reason to celebrate.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has named the campus publication a Crown Awards finalist.

Finalists will receive either a Silver or Gold Crown during the College Media Convention scheduled for March 9-12 at the Sheraton in Manhattan, according to Columbia officials.

A total of 1,344 digital, newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2011-12 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2013 Crown Awards Program, officials said.

All entries were judged at Columbia University from December 8-10.

This year, the association judged digital only, print magazine, print newspaper and print yearbook as well as a new category - hybrid, a membership classified as a publication that works to combine their digital and print publications as one. The Campus Times spring and fall editions have been recognized under this new category, according to a news release issued by the university.

“The Campus Times is one of just 10 different publications from nine different institutions across the United States to be honored as finalists in the College Hybrid Publication category,” according to the news release. “This is a new category created by CSPA to recognize publications that produce both print and digital editions.”

Print and digital were previously judged separately, and the Campus Times earned its Gold Crown Award in the digital category last year, officials wrote.

For this first year of hybrids judges found some publications were still stronger as either print or digital, Columbia officials said. They chose to move these publications into one category or the other. This gave the staffs an opportunity not to be penalized for their attempt to combine their print and digital production.

Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, will present plaques to those winners attending the Convention. Remaining awards will be mailed beginning April 1.

The CSPA is an international student press association uniting student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges and award programs. Owned by Columbia University since 1925 and associated with its Graduate School of Journalism, the CSPA offers three major services: 1-annual competitions and awards for members, including the Crown Awards, 2-planning two conventions (one national, one regional) and a week-long summer workshop at Columbia, plus 3-small press publishing activities to support magazine articles published as part of its website and an annual Awards DVD.
