🌱 BART Revenue Down + Pediatric Pfizer Preorder + Safe Route

Here's the latest edition of the Concord Daily! Here's your go-to for the most important things going on in the community.

(Patch Media)

Hello, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Concord Daily.

First, today's weather:

Clouds giving way to some sun. High: 70 Low: 54.

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. A woman died early Monday morning in Concord when the car she was in hit a light pole, police said. The fatal incident was reported around 1:45 a.m. on Port Chicago Highway near High School Avenue. The front passenger, a 51-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released pending notification of her family members. (Concord Patch)
  2. While BART ridership is currently ahead of projected totals through September, the Bay Area's slow return to offices could trickle down to a long-term loss of fare revenue for BART and that may result in nine-figure budget deficits as soon as the 2023-2024 fiscal year without a significant increase in its operating revenue, the transit agency's budget officials said. According to data from the Bay Area Council, office occupancy as of mid-October is only at roughly one-quarter of 2019 levels in both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas and that translates to a commensurate reduction in ridership. While BART still has hundreds of millions of dollars in federal pandemic relief funding available, that funding is expected to be depleted by fiscal year 2023 or 2024. (Claycord.com)
  3. Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has pre-ordered about 20,000 doses of the pediatric version of the Pfizer vaccine as the county prepares for federal and state health officials to expand eligibility to kids ages 5-11. Other healthcare providers and pharmacies are also stocking up and getting ready. CCHS is working with education and healthcare partners in the region to host vaccine clinics at school sites once eligibility expands to younger kids. (East County Today)
  4. The sole occupant of a truck traveling west on Highway 4 near the Alhambra Avenue exit was ejected and seriously injured when his truck overturned Monday. The man was airlifted to the hospital. (News 24/680)
  5. Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda), and City of Lafayette Councilmembers gathered to announce the acquisition of funds from the 2021-2022 California State Budget to begin the design of Lafayette's important Safe Route to Acalanes High School project. The route would provide Acalanes students with a safe route to school that would eliminate the current need to cross busy onramps to Highway 24. Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan and her City partners succeeded in securing state funding of $238,000 in this year's budget to design and prepare for the new protected route. The project creates a multi-use pathway down the middle of Pleasant Hill Road, utilizing and modifying an existing center median space. (East County Today)
