CONCORD, CA — Contra Costa County firefighters extinguished another fire early Monday at an abandoned U.S. Coast Guard building on Mt. Hood Circle in Concord. The blaze was reported at 1:43 a.m. Monday at an 8-unit apartment building that used to house Coast Guard personnel, Con Fire Spokesman Steve Hill told Patch.

The single-alarm fire along the south side of the former Naval Weapons Station property — near Willow Pass Park and Pixieland Amusement Park — was substantially out by 2:20 a.m., Hill said.

Nearby East Olivera Road was closed for a few hours as crews defensively battled the blaze.

"In the meantime, part of the roof and second floor had collapsed," Hill said. "You may recall we fought a similar fire there several weeks ago. In that fire, a firefighter fell through a hole in the floor and received minor injuries."

The old, abandoned buildings offer their own unique firefighting dangers, he said.

A cause has not yet been determined for the fire; investigators remained on scene Monday.

The previous fire Hill referred to broke out Jan. 18; that blaze was determined to be an "unattended fire in a vacant building" with its definitive cause not likely to be established.
