Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- In a press release issued Monday, Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton announced her campaign for re-election in the June 7th Primary Election. Appointed by the Board of Supervisors, Becton took office in 2017 as the first woman and first African-American District Attorney in the county's 167-year history. She was then elected in 2018. Becton is currently the only African-American District Attorney in California. According to the Contra Costa Elections office, as of Tuesday, Feb. 15, she faces two challengers in the race, including criminal defense attorney Lawrence Strauss, who placed a distant third in the 2018 election, and veteran Contra Costa Deputy DA Mary Knox. - Each year, Engineering News Record California and Northwest salutes 25 young professionals from Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington who are under the age of 40 and have shown extraordinary leadership and service. A panel of volunteer judges evaluates the nominees on their experience and education, career accomplishments and leadership, and community service and involvement. - The City of Concord will host a Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act (TEFRA) public hearing on Feb. 22 to approve the issuance of up to $45 million in California Municipal Finance Authority (CMFA) tax exempt bond., The bond financing will allow for the acquisition, rehabilitation, and conversion to affordable housing of The Lakes Apartments, a 102-unit, 55-year old multi-family complex, by Integrity Housing, a California non-profit. - The Antioch Police Department announced Tuesday that on Valentines Day, officers made three arrests with drivers in possession of stolen vehicles, resulting in three stolen vehicle recoveries. In each incident, the subjects were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. Police said so far in the month of February, they have recovered 32 stolen vehicles. Since January 1, they have recovered 62 stolen vehicles. (East County Today)
- Here's a nice roundup of goings on in the Danville/San Ramon area including an inaugural Social Justice Fair this weekend, aimed at showcasing advocacy and activism work by groups from both far and wide, and Friends of the Danville Library is hosting a pop-up book sale on Saturday, among other things. - U.S. Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, who represents 21 Contra Costa County cities and communities in Congress, will host a virtual town hall this week to discuss voting in the county. The town hall runs from noon until 1 p.m. Friday on Zoom and will be streamed live on the congressman's Facebook page. The event is a follow-up to DeSaulnier's town hall last month on voting rights.
