For the first show of the 2011-2012 season, Butterfield 8 Theatre Company takes on Christopher Marlowe's Edward II, directed and adapted by company member Edwin Peabody.
It's 1921 in London, the great war has ended and the jazz age has begun. The populace has been decimated by the Spanish flu, which took King Edward I's life. His son, King Edward II, an open homosexual, is perceived as ineffectual as a leader and a husband, and has raised the ire of the nobles by inviting back into England his exiled love, Piers Gaveston. Feeling they need stronger leadership and national unity, the nobles turn to young Mortimer, a hot-headed noble with a fascist slant and a hatred of the new King. As Gaveston returns, the country faces its biggest challenge as fascism rises and peace and prosperity are threatened with revolution. How far will Edward and Mortimer go in their pursuit of what is best for England? Find out what it truly means to be a king in this complex and psychological play.
Edward II previews October 6, 2011 and closes October 30.
