Happy Friday, people of Concord! Here's everything worth knowing around town today.

First, today's weather:

A.M. downpours; mostly cloudy. High: 68 Low: 54.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. At least 50 people have signed up to meet in front of the Concord Police Department and walk toward Todos Santos Plaza to protest COVID vaccine mandates. The California Freedom of Choice Rally is slated from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. today. The group's message is that coronavirus vaccines should not be mandated but a choice people are allowed to make on their own. (Concord Patch)
  2. Defense attorneys for Andrew Hall, the Danville police officer charged with manslaughter for the shooting death of Laudemer Arboleda in 2018, have rested their case without calling their client to testify. The central issue of Hall's defense remains that he and other deputies believed they were in imminent danger. Prosecutors allege the deputy used more force than was legally justified. Tensions heightened when it was determined that Arboleda had previously been diagnosed with mental illness, possibly explaining the odd actions he had exhibited the day he came to the attention of neighbors and police. (News 24/680)
  3. An unidentified tree trimmer was killed in a fall while cutting away dead limbs of a 60-70 foot tree on Camino Ricardo in Moraga on Wednesday. The man worked for the same company that was involved with an on-the-job death of one of its workers in Alamo last year. In that case, the worker was using a chainsaw near live wires and was electrocuted when his saw hit one of the wires. The company, Superior Tree Service, incurred nearly $30,000 in fines as a result of that incident. Industry sources said the company has had frequent accidents and near-accidents, avoiding censure or license revocation with frequent name changes and shuttling management. The company currently has an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau. OSHA is still investigating Wednesday's incident. (News 24/680)
  4. A federal grand jury has indicted Alan K. Anderson, of Walnut Creek, charging him with wire fraud and securities fraud charges related to a scheme to use materially false and fraudulent pretenses to induce investors to make contributions to three businesses that were marketed as providing child-friendly internet services. The indictment alleges that Anderson used misrepresentations to solicit investments for the three businesses. (Contra Costa Herald)
  5. Contra Costa County has created a dashboard to track the progress to eliminate the indoor mask mandate. Each of the three criteria is tracked and progress is shown. Click this link to see the dashboard. (Claycord.com)

  • Perhaps you've seen it when you drive east on Marsh Creek Road just past Morgan Territory Road. The sign reads "Sunshine." The Martinez Historical Society has some news articles that shed some light on this curious sign. Apparently, it was a facility in that area known as the Sunshine Camp Preventorium, with a fascinating history. Read all about it at this link.
  • The county will be hosting a series of Community Redistricting Workshops to discuss the redistricting process and solicit public input throughout the county. The next one is on Sunday, October 24, 2021, @ 12:00 NOON. Zoom Link
