Hazmat Spill In Contra Costa Sends 4 To Hospital, Including 2 Firefighters
Four people were hospitalized after being exposed to organophosphorus, a toxic chemical used in pesticides.
CONCORD, CA — Four people, including two firefighters, were hospitalized Monday afternoon in Concord due to an accidental spill of a hazardous material, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said.
The spill of organophosphorous - organic chemicals widely used in pesticides that can cause a range of poisoning symptoms - took place around 1:20 p.m. Monday on Bisso Lane in Concord, according to officials. By 3 p.m., the chemical had been isolated, and four patients were transported to a nearby medical center.
Victims included a FedEx delivery driver and his assistant, who reported feeling dizzy as they delivered a package, fire officials told ABC7.

Organophosphorous compounds can affect the nervous system and may be dangerous or fatal with significant exposure, according to the National Library of Medicine.
