Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- More than $22,000 was raised as of Thursday night to help send the body of a 16-year-old Concord boy to be buried in his home country of El Salvador. Jose Grande Castillo was riding his bicycle around 3:30 p.m. last Friday when he was struck in a collision involving a tree-trimming truck and multiple other vehicles at the intersection of Galindo Street and Clayton Road, according to Concord police and the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office. Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the involved drivers, 28-year-old Concord resident Adelaido Antonio Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and was booked into the county jail, Concord police said Wednesday. Any witnesses are asked to contact Traffic Officer Nanthasiri at 925-603-5096. (Concord Patch)
- Representatives from Valero and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District appeared in front of the Benicia City Council this week after revelations were made known that the refinery was emitting harmful, excessive levels of hazardous chemicals for nearly 16 years before BAAQMD said it became aware of them. The presentation given to council was an attempt by the air district to "be more transparent," something it says it is committed to in the wake of the revelations. As part of this effort, BAAQMD will be holding a March 15 public hearing about these Valero violations. The air district will also be installing a remote air monitoring station in Benicia near the Fire Museum at 900 East Second Street, a move that councilmembers unanimously accepted Tuesday. - Walnut Creek institution Lindsay Wildlife Experience is going to be around town for at least another 30 years. The education center and wildlife rehabilitation center recently reached an agreement with the city to stay at its First Avenue location, adjacent to Larkey Park, for another three decades. - Contra Costa Sheriff Deputy Andrew Hall was sentenced to six years in state prison for assault with a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury upon Laudemer Aboleda in downtown Danville on November 3, 2018. As found by the jury, Deputy Andrew Hall unreasonably shot Laudemer Aboleda. "In sentencing the defendant to prison, the court recognized the need for accountability in Deputy Hall's decision to fire multiple times at Laudemer Aboleda, taking his life," the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office said in a release. - On Friday, Feb. 25, attorneys representing Discovery Builders and its Faria new home development requested a new trial for the lawsuit by Save Mount Diablo. The motion for a new trial was filed "on the basis that the court's decision is not supported by the evidence and controlling legal authorities. Specifically…that there were several portions of this Court's February 10 Statement of Decision that may not have fully considered evidence in the administrative record." A hearing date on the motion for a new trial has been set for April 14. (Contra Costa Herald)
