Navy: Bay Exercise Helps Sailors to Defend Against Terror Attack

Sailors from Naval Base Coronado group took part in an exercise earlier this month to simulate an attack on Navy ships reminiscent of the 2000 Cole bombing.

Coastal Riverine Group 1 sailors from the Naval Outlying Landing Field participated in a recent training exercise to simulate responses to threats like a terrorist attack.

Sailors practiced high-speed manuevers in small boats and blank fire with a variety of weapons in the exercise held April 4 in San Diego Bay, said Lt. Cmdr. Donnell Evans.

The outlying landing field in Imperial Beach is part of Naval Base Coronado.

"What we're training these guys on right now is to adapt to those threats and to be able to provide that level of security that wasn't there for the USS Cole," Chief Petty Officer Justin Smith told Navy News Service.

While the Cole was refueling at a harbor in Yemen in October 2000, a small boat packed with explosives and manned by suicide bombers blasted a hole in the side of the ship, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39.
