Early Goal Holds Up as Coronado Girls Win Soccer Title

Mallory Mitchell scores for Islanders, duplicating a feat that sparked the 2008 championship.

With a goal in the third minute by Mallory Mitchell, the Coronado High girls soccer team claimed its third CIF championship in the last four years Saturday, a 1-0 shutout of Bishop's in the Division IV final at Cathedral Catholic.

It was deja vu for Mitchell, who had the lone goal when the Islanders beat the Knights 1-0 for the 2008 title. Mitchell was recently sidelined for nearly a month with a concussion, but came back in the semis against Parker to help with the championship run.

Islander goalkeeper Cory DeMarco had eight saves in registering the shutout. Second-seeded Coronado is 12-6-4 and will find out its opponent in the Southern California Regionals late Sunday. Top-seeded Bishop's (13-4) will earn a berth as well.
