📰 News we're reading
• Car thefts decline citywide, but climb in PB (timesofsandiego.com) — San Diego's overall car thefts are down nearly 19% year over year, but some neighborhoods are still seeing increases. Buried in the roundup is a note that Vogue just reviewed the new Baby Grand hotel in Coronado, calling it a whimsical, decaying "Little Mermaid-meets-Liberace" fantasyland that locals might want to check out.

• Piggly Wiggly on Newport Avenue: The oddly named store that changed how San Diego shopped (timesofsandiego.com) — Longtime residents may remember when Coronado once had its own Piggly Wiggly, part of a wider San Diego network of early self-service grocery stores. This history piece focuses on the Ocean Beach location but notes Coronado among several communities that hosted the oddly named chain. It traces how Piggly Wiggly changed everyday shopping and then quietly disappeared from local storefronts.

• Senator Weber Pierson Announces Legislation to Help Move Midway Rising Forward (ca.gov) — Coronado falls within Senator Akilah Weber Pierson's district, and she's backing a new bill, SB 344, to keep San Diego's massive Midway Rising redevelopment on track after its environmental review. While the project centers on the Sports Arena/Midway District, it aims to add thousands of affordable homes, jobs, parks, childcare and health services that could influence regional housing and employment options for Coronado residents. The bill is meant to clear a path for construction to begin in 2027.
