📰 News we're reading
1. New SWIFT lanes at North Island to reduce traffic and save manpower (thecoronadonews.com) — Traffic at Naval Air Station North Island's main gates in Coronado is set to change as new facial-recognition SWIFT lanes aim to double vehicle throughput and cut sailor staffing from 15 to three. Residents who regularly battle gate backups can enroll at the North Island Visitor Center, though everyone in a vehicle must register and motorcycles can't yet use the system.

2. One motorcyclist killed, another seriously injured in crash on Silver Strand Boulevard in Coronado (cbs8.com) — A late-night motorcycle crash on Silver Strand Boulevard in Coronado left one rider dead and another seriously injured, and southbound lanes between Hooper Boulevard and Rainbow Drive remain closed during the investigation. Only one northbound lane is open, so drivers should expect delays, use extra caution, and consider alternate routes toward Imperial Beach while police determine whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors.

3. No phones at CMS: 'It's been wonderful' (coronadotimes.com) — Coronado Middle School's new cell phone ban is five weeks in, and Principal Brooke Falar says it's working better than expected, with only nine first offenses so far. Teachers report fewer distractions, more social interaction, and happier students, as kids spend lunch playing games and talking instead of using phones and computers.

4. How 200 soccer balls wound up in the mayor's office (coronadotimes.com) — More than 200 free FIFA soccer balls unexpectedly arrived at Coronado City Hall, and Mayor John Duncan turned the surprise into a goodwill tour across town. Balls were shared with the new Coronado Cays dog park and several local schools, as Duncan highlighted how simply showing up for kids and community events can make city leaders more visible and approachable.

5. Tool and Parts Attendant (verticalmag.com) — A new Tool and Parts Attendant position is open at Naval Base Coronado, offering $25.49 per hour plus health and welfare benefits and 11 paid holidays. Applicants need at least a year of tools-and-parts experience, a valid driver's license, basic computer skills, and the ability to obtain any required clearances. Coronado residents with warehousing or maintenance support backgrounds may find this especially relevant.
