• Costa Mesa business owners buried in bills after trying to dump local trash service (latimes.com subscription) — Costa Mesa business owners say they're being hit with mounting trash bills even after trying to cancel service with local hauler Ware Disposal, despite a 2024 City Council rule change meant to make switching companies easier. Two auto shops describe thousands in charges and difficulty getting bins removed, while the city confirms it relies on the same hauler for municipal trash collection. If you run a business here, these contract rules could affect your bottom line.
   

• Claim Jumper steakhouse in Buena Park closes (ocregister.com) — Costa Mesa's Claim Jumper inside South Coast Plaza is now the only remaining Orange County location after the Buena Park restaurant closed this week. The chain, founded in Los Alamitos, has steadily shrunk in California, with just Costa Mesa and San Diego left, plus a few casino locations in Nevada and Louisiana. Locals may see more changes ahead, as no replacement is announced yet.
   

• Ocean View football runs past Gahr for fourth win in a row (latimes.com subscription) — Ocean View High's football team will bring its four-game winning streak into a Sigma League opener at Costa Mesa on Oct. 2, after a 19-9 road win over Gahr powered by 237 rushing yards from Trevor Vaivao. The Seahawks leaned entirely on the run and a ball-hawking defense, setting up a compelling matchup for local fans when they visit Costa Mesa's 2-3 squad next week.
