Centaurs Lacrosse Routs Beverly Hills

Goalie Logan Young has 32 saves in Culver City's league-opening win.

Culver City High School boys lacrosse coach Casey Chabola could not have envisioned a better start to league play than that which his team enjoyed Monday at the expense of archrival Beverly Hills. With a roster full of seniors, this could be the year to make a deep run at the section title.

The Centaurs scored early and often in their South Bay League opener and got 32 saves from goalie Logan Young in a 17-3 trouncing of the visiting Normans. Derek Owings led the way with five goals, Elliot Stanger had three and Martin Beer and Eliud Evans each added three for Culver City, which raced to a 10-1 halftime lead and cruised from there.

"I thought we came out and moved the ball well and played with intensity," Chabola said. "It's great to start our league season with a win."

Last year, the Centaurs finished third in league and beat Beverly Hills three times, by scores of 8-5, 10-8 and 9-0. However, they were unable to record a victory against the two best teams, Mira Costa and Palos Verdes.

"It was amazing," Beer said. "It's the first time we blew out Beverly that great when I was playing. My expectations are a championship. I think we have like 20 [seniors]. This definitely our year."

Justin Chucuan, Taylor Resnik and Matt Suyetsugu also scored for the Centaurs, who gained momentum heading into Wednesday's game against Palos Verdes Peninsula.

"This is the last time I'll play Beverly at this field so it's nice beating them," said Resnik, a senior middie. "We have a lot of potential this year. It took us three years until now to hopefully beat the teams like Mira Costa and Palos Verdes."

Michael Suh made 13 saves, Morgan Henderson scored twice and Nick Heller added a fourth-quarter goal for Beverly Hills, which fired 35 shots at Culver City's net.

"It's always fun to beat Beverly [Hills]," Stanger said. "This is my first year, so I haven't experienced all the beatdowns, but hopefully it's the other way around from now on. We're on the upside of winning and that's great."

The Centaurs host Palos Verdes in a night game March 16 and face the Sea Kings on the road April 11, where they lost 21-3 last season. Culver City is determined to turn the tables this spring.

"It's a great goals-to-saves ratio, we just slid fast, there were no one-on-ones, I gobbled all the runs up," Young said. "I credit [defender] Derrick Lietz for sliding fast so we can't get our hands open."
