The West Los Angeles Group of the Sierra Club is proud to present "Winged Wonders of Southern California" with Walt Sakai, Professor of Biology at Santa Monica College.
Learn about the amazing variety of birds in our local mountains that Prof. Sakai and his students have studied, including the beautiful Lazuli Bunting, the handsome Spotted Towhee, and stunning Bullock's Oriole. Prof. Sakai will update us on the inventory and monitoring of small owls in the Angeles National Forest such as the Northern Saw-Whet Owl. The Saw-Whet Owl's name comes from the "skiew" call that is made when alarmed. This sound has a resemblance to the whetting of a saw. These cute, little nocturnal owls are residents of our local San Gabriel Mountains from the canyon live oak and big-cone Douglas-Fir zone around 5,000 feet up to the mixed pine and fir forest at 6,000-7,500 feet in elevation.
