Helping Seniors Stay Safe in the Heat

Cooling tips for seniors.

The temperatures have been extremely hot recently, and while many of us may be in an air conditioned office or home, don’t forget that our elderly friends, family or neighbors may not have the benefit of air conditioning in their home. There are things they can do to keep cool and navigate this heat.

  1. Just add water: Take a cool shower or soak feet in a tub of cold water.
  2. Dress for the heat: Wear natural fabrics (cotton, silk, linen) rather than polyester or other artificial fibers.
  3. Keep the air flowing: Use fans and, if possible, create cross-ventilation by opening windows or doors on opposite sides of a room.
  4. Keep it dark and cool:  Close curtains or blinds to block the sun during the day.
  5. A hint of mint: Use mint or menthol products (ex. peppermint soaps or lotions) to cool skin. Mint refreshes the skin and leaves a nice, cooling sensation.

Of course, sometimes even the best cooling techniques can’t help on a scorching day. In that case, they should consider visiting a cool, air conditioned venue such as a library, senior center, indoor shopping center or movie theater. If they don’t have transportation, they can always utilize our service – TLC Senior Ride – or many of the city funded services available to them.
