New Menu Items at Viviane in Beverly Hills
Executive Chef Michael Hung, known for wowing diners with his cuisine steps up with some new additions
Who would've thought that there’s a groovy hotel along the artery of Olympic Boulevard in Beverly Hills? Nestled near a residential section is the ‘60s chic retro Avalon, camouflaged nicely despite the urban sprawl.
From the outside, I'm reminded of those places from a bygone era, and this hotel and its flagship restaurant Viviane were no exception. Walking in, you are thrown back to the days of Mad Men, stiff martinis and happening hipsters lounging by the pool. Cool.
Make a left turn into the restaurant, and you are immediately immersed into a muted time warp, padded with some modern flair. Surely Don Draper must be here somewhere.
The food is fun, thanks to Executive Chef Michael Hung. Known for wowing diners with his cuisine, Hung’s new menu of rustic California dishes incorporates persuasions from Europe, the near and far East, North Africa, and Latin America. Sit inside or grab a table poolside or in one of the coveted cabanas nearby.

Perfect for sharing, his dishes exhibit that progressive flair. They are innovative, without being overly ambitious with conflicting flavors and colors.
We started with two appetizers. I favored the warmed Burrata Cheese and Roasted Mushroom Tartine, spongy and succulent, while my dining partner leaned toward the tart Albacore Tuna Tartare. The bone marrow aioli on this dish was a nice surprise. Presentation was perfect-the added visuals augmenting the dishes.
It's fun to dine with somebody who is palate is the polar opposite of yours, and between the Pan Seared Pacific Cod, and the 10 oz. Long Cooked Short Ribs, it was a tough decision. The sauce on the ribs was subtle, and a nice pairing with the meat. The cod was delightfully light with some tasty accents thanks to the eggplant, tomatoes and olives.
Worth mentioning are some of Hung’s newer menu items which included Tai Snapper Kinilaw Tempura, Fried Squash Blossoms, Baked Marin Creamery Brie, and several other dishes. Had our party included other diners, it would have been fun to explore all these items as well. Maybe next time.

Both desserts were sinful, although I’m a sucker for Banana Cream Pie while my partner preferred the Lavender Panna Cotta, a new addition to his menu. Lazily, we meandered back to the car, pleased with our new discovery.
If you want to retro chic experience, make sure you add this place to your to-do list. There is ample street parking if you get there early enough, which is always a pleasant surprise in Los Angeles.
