Taix French Restaurant-Affordable French Elegance

French dining doesn't have to be a stuffy or expensive experience

Sometimes you don't want a trendy place. Sometimes you just want to feel enveloped in old-world charm and enjoy some great affordable food. If that’s the case, then head to Taix French Restaurant a family-run institution since 1927.

Moving from downtown L.A. to Echo park in 1962, the success of Taix has been carried down for generations. Original owner Marius passed his expertise along to son Raymond who extended his skills to his son Michael. Michael’s passion for wines has resulted in an extensive, award-winning wine list. And many employees have worked there for decades, a testament to the loyalty the restaurant has created.

Look at the photos on the wall from the turn-of-the-century, taking you back to simpler times. Hospitality rings true in this place, with the staff attentive, but not overbearing, making you feel like you are truly a member of their family.

As it’s the Tour de France, we started with one of the regional wine specials commemorating the race. If you’re in the lounge, Taix will be screening replays of the event. Enjoy $6 wine specials representing each region of the tour as you watch the world’s top cyclists journey through France throughout the 23-day tour.

We ate in the dining room, starting with their French onion soup, a thick and hearty concoction and one of their signature dishes. Also memorable was the escargot, worth wrestling out of their ambitious shells.

Although I loved my fish special, I thought the short ribs were even better, flanked with asparagas and a generous scoop of their scalloped potatoes. Don’t feel guilty about indulging in this side dish. You can always go to confession tomorrow.

Save room for dessert, with our preference skewing toward dense chocolate mousse.

In celebration of Bastille Day, Taix’s special of the day will be a classic French bouillabaisse. Yum!

In this crazy town of hustle, bustle and hype, it's nice to know that there's a place that truly makes you feel like you're just a regular person, without all the cell phone madness that permeates so many restaurants these days.

Come relax and enjoy!
