5 From Santa Clara Co. Crash Travis AFB Gate, Arrested: Police

FAIRFIELD, CA – Five Santa Clara County men were arrested this morning after their car crashed through a gate at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, a Santa Clara police lieutenant said.

The incident shut down the base between 6:37 and 7:37 a.m.

The five men in a Chevrolet Tahoe ran into a field and were apprehended and taken to the Fairfield Police Department, Santa Clara police Lt. Dan Moreno said.

The incident began around 5 a.m. when Santa Clara police detectives were watching the Chevrolet that they believed was occupied by suspects who were stealing lottery tickets from gas stations and liquor stores in Santa Clara, including one suspect who had an arrest warrant for a San Jose burglary, Moreno said.

Detectives followed the Chevrolet to a gas station in Fairfield and called Fairfield police.

Fairfield police officers in a patrol vehicle and Solano County sheriff's deputies tried to stop the car but it took off and crashed through the manned gate at Travis Air Force Base, Moreno said.

Travis Air Force Base personnel arrested the man with the burglary warrant and the four other men after they ran into a field. No shots were fired during the incident, Moreno said.
