AAII-Silicon Valley: Computerized Investing Meeting

The Computerized Investing-Mechanical Investing Group discusses how to use algorithms, programs, tools and spreadsheets in investing

The AAII Silicon Valley Computerized Investing-Mechanical Investing (CIMI) Group discusses ideas on how to use computers in investing. The group has a definite mechanical investing flavor, focusing on rules, algorithms, programs, and computerized investing tools of various flavors.

Typical CIMI Meeting Topics and Agenda include:

  • Introduction, General Administrative Items
  • Updates on discussions/postings since the last meeting
  • Presentation(s) focusing on one or more of the following topics:
  • --- Recent topics from AAII (e.g., from the AAII Journal, Computerized Investing, SI Pro, etc.)
  • --- Stock, ETF Strategy review, back test results
  • --- New Timing and Stock Strategy Simulation Results

For example, our April meeting featured

  • An update on the Kelly Criterion from Ren. This included a back-test study that compared Kelley as a ranking algorithm vs. several other "standard momentum metrics (e.g., FundX score, 10 Month momentum, etc.)
  • We then reviewed a benchmark/back-test study of the TradeStops tool and how it worked on various indices, the 9 sector ETFs and the Dow 30.
  • We concluded by following-up on last month's CIMI presentation from Prediction Valley. In this case we took Prediction Valley's public trade history and, making some reasonable assumptions on costs and how an individual could implement this strategy, summarized their performance.
