Acterra's 50th Anniversary in 2020
As Earth Day turns 50, why we need a healthy planet more than ever

On April 22, 1970, the original Earth Day, the public came together in a powerful call for change. Catalyzing this change were intense images of environmental catastrophe that had appeared everywhere in the media, including huge oil spills, rivers on fire, and burgeoning mountains of trash. Business as usual was failing our planet, and something had to be done. Locally, the Bay Area organization that eventually became known as Acterra was also founded on April 22, 1970—for the purpose of helping people taking action on environmental problems and connect with others in the community to create greater impact.
Fifty years later, we now stand at a different crossroads. Recognition of the urgent need for action on climate change has now emerged from a range of sources: student activists, corporate boardrooms, disruptive startups, local governments, and many others. Pulling through this moment, we've begun to grasp, will require a concerted on-the-ground effort, with no time left to lose.
As we commemorate the past 50 years of community impact and environmental action, and look forward to the road ahead, Acterra invites supporters, friends, and community members to join in an evening in honor of this milestone year.
