This summer, a selected group of 14 students and two chaperones, Ms. Sharon Fong and Ms. Crislyn Lawson, had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of representing their city of Cupertino overseas in Japan as delegates. Beginning with their send-off from San Francisco Airport, all the students sported joyful expressions on their faces filled with excitement. Part of their visit included a homestay in Cupertino’s beautiful sister city, Toyokawa, with a Japanese family, which included a Toyokawa delegate who would come to Cupertino in September. They spent the other half of their trip learning different aspects of Japanese culture by visiting Japanese temples, shrines, and castles in Nagoya, Kyoto, and Nara as well as attending workshops to immerse themselves in Japanese art.
