Cupertino Scraps July 4 Fireworks Due To Drought

The display would require 100,000 gallons of water.

Cupertino city officials announced Wednesday that they have canceled a Fourth of July fireworks show this year due to concerns surrounding the state drought.

The annual show was scheduled to be held at the Cupertino High School fields, but the Fremont Union High School District is “reluctantly denying” the city’s request to use the site because hosting the display would require spraying more than 100,000 gallons of water, city officials said.

The fields need to be watered “to prevent damage to the facility,” according to the city officials. The city was unable to find another site to launch the fireworks, city officials said.
