Grab Your Bikes and Skates: Villa CalleSJ Underway Today

SAN JOSE – Six miles of streets in San Jose will be shut down to vehicle traffic today for Viva CalleSJ, a free program encouraging residents to enjoy some of the city's neighborhoods on foot, bike or skates.

This year's version of the event, "From the West: Glen Meets Zen," will be on streets through Japantown, Willow Glen, Burbank, and Downtown between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

At four different activity hubs -- Arena Green, West San Carlos, Japantown and Willow Glen -- there will be live music and dancing, food trucks, tents featuring local businesses and artists, among other things to
do.

There will be plenty of child-friendly activities too, such as arts and crafts, bounce houses and face painting. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety training program from the city's Department of Transportation will
also give away 500 free bike helmets to kids.

Cars parked on the street along the route will be towed starting at 1 a.m. Sunday and the streets will close down at 6 a.m. After the event, the roads will reopen by 4 p.m., event organizers said.
