DANVILLE, CA — It’s almost Christmas in Danville, so here’s an explosion of glittering red to celebrate.

Patch’s resident astronomer Bob Schiff took a photo of the Eastern Veil Nebula, part of the Cygnus Loop located about 2,100 light years from Earth. The Cygnus Loop contains the shattered remnants of a star 20 times the sizeof the Sun that exploded in a supernova about 10,000 years ago. The photo shows the remains of a once massive star, made colorful by ionized gasses.

Thank you, Bob! If you'd like to submit photos, either celestial or terrestrial, email Michael.wittner@patch.com.
