Crescent Nebula From Danville: Photo Of The Day

Enjoy this enchanting photo caught from a backyard telescope.

The nebula's structure is caused by strong winds interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase of the star's life cycle.

DANVILLE, CA — It may look like a jellyfish or a beating heart, but it’s actually the Crescent Nebula, an emission nebula located 5,000 light years away at the outer reaches of the Milky Way. Danville resident Bob Schiff, who owns a heavy-duty telescope and has shared personal photos he’s taken of Jupiter, Saturn, the Green Comet, the Whirlpool Galaxy, the Heart Nebula, and much more with Patch, gives us his latest capture. Enjoy it while you can, because it’s predicted to end in a fantastic supernova explosion.

See here to learn more about this enchanting nebula, which has dazzled astronomers since 1792.
