Danville Police Warn Of Hurricane Dorian Scams
Be cautious of fraudulent emails, social media pleas, texts, and door to door solicitations around helping survivors.
DANVILLE, CA — Danville police sent along a warning Wednesday from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is warning computer users to be on the lookout for malicious cyber activity targeting Hurricane Dorian disaster victims and potential donors.
"After major natural disasters, groups and individuals will often take up cause to help those affected by the disaster. At the same time other, less honorable, types will try to create chaos and take advantage," the warning read.
"Fraudulent emails commonly appear after these sorts of incidents, many of them containing links or attachments that either contain malware or direct users to malicious websites.
"Additionally, users should be cautious of social media pleas, texts, and door to door solicitations around helping survivors of a disaster. Make sure you know where the money is going, and try to stay with well-known and bonafide relief agencies such as the Red Cross. Stay cautious, and stay safe."
