Driver In Deadly Tesla Crash ID’d As Danville Resident

Investigators are trying to figure out what happened to cause the fatal collision.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — The driver involved in a deadly crash into a pond on Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley has been identified as a Danville resident. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said 34-year-old Keith Leung was the sole occupant of the Tesla Model S. Leung died when the Tesla apparently went off the roadway while traveling north in the 11000 block of Crow Canyon Road and ended up in the water about 65 feet from the edge of the pond, CHP spokesman Officer Dan Jacowitz said.

The crash was discovered on Sunday evening, according to the CHP, although the exact timing of the crash in not known at this point. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was called in to retrieve the car and the driver's body, which were pulled from the water overnight. Officials said Leung was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Crow Canyon Road was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to pull the wreckage from the water, but the road reopened at 5:45 a.m. Monday morning.

CHP investigators were at the scene to probe the cause of the crash. It has not been announced if the self-driving autopilot was engaged at the time of the crash. There have been multiple crashes recently involving Tesla vehicles in which the auto-pilot was engaged, including a deadly crash on Highway 101 in Mountain View in March.
