Help Cancer Patients Say Yes to Potentially Life-Saving Treatment

Join friends and community members Saturday, April 25, at 9 a.m. for the annual Lazarex Cancer Foundation 5.44K walk and fun run. The family-friendly event travels through downtown Danville and along the Iron Horse Trail. Founded in 2006, Lazarex Cancer Foundation helps end-stage cancer patients identify clinical trial options and provides financial assistance to help get them there.

Why 5.44K? The average cancer patient travels 544 miles to take part in a clinical trial. While clinical trials themselves are free, the expenses associated with the journey—gas, parking, airfare, taxis, rideshares, and hotels—are not. With many trials requiring patients to be on site weekly or monthly, these expenditures can add up quickly. Too often, cancer patients, whose finances are already strapped due to their illness, find these ancillary costs insurmountable.

To reduce the financial burden, Lazarex Cancer Foundation reimburses cancer patients for travel expenses on a sliding scale. When needed, they will also cover a travel companion. In 2019, Lazarex Cancer Foundation assisted more than 800 patients from all over the United States with clinical trial navigation and travel payments.

Those who can’t attend the 5.44K in Danville but still want to support the foundation's mission are encouraged to take part virtually or form a team and organize a local 5.44K, whether it be a walk, run, cycle or swim.

Every dollar raised goes towards helping cancer patients say “Yes” to taking part in potentially life-saving treatment.

When: Saturday, April 25. Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m., walk/run starts at 9 a.m. Kids and pets are welcome! The morning includes snacks, a vendor expo and a pre 5.44K warm-up!
