Lunar Occultation Of Mars: Danville Photos Of The Day

From his Danville backyard, Bob Schiff took these photos of the moon briefly eclipsing Mars Wednesday night.

DANVILLE, CA — During a brief respite from winter rain, Bay Area starwatchers were able to witness a dazzling event: a bright red Mars disappearing behind the moon and then reappearing about an hour later.

Danville Patch’s resident astronomer Bob Schiff took two photos of what is officially referred to as the Lunar Occultation of Mars. At about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mars snuck behind the moon, and reappeared at about 7:30 p.m. Schiff was able to capture both. Even if you missed it, you’ll still be able to enjoy the Red Planet. Mars is at opposition this week, meaning that it forms a straight line between the Earth and the sun, and will be much easier to spot than usual.

Thank you for sharing, Bob!
