Meet Master Pop-Up Book Artist David A. Carter Saturday

The 'Once Upon a Book' exhibition at the Village Theatre welcomes David A. Carter, the paper engineering wizard behind more than 50 pop-up books, Saturday. He will share his books with children, and lead them through creating their own pop-up crafts.

Kids can experience imaginative books that pop off the page this Saturday.

Prolific author and pop-up book artist, David A. Carter will visit the Village Theatre as part of the ongoing exhibit.

Carter will read from his  pop-up book, One Red Dot, which was featured on The Martha Stewart Show. Carter will also help children create a holiday themed pop-up craft.

Carter is the author of more than 50 pop-up books, including the best–selling 'Bugs' series, which Simon & Schuster says has sold over six million copies. He also created the pop-up for Dr. Seuss' Oh The Places You Will Go

He has two books due to be published in December, including Up & Down, in the Bugs series, and, Colors, in his Baby Bugs series.

Born in 1957, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in Bountiful, Utah, Carter has been an artist, and skier, from an early age He studied art and illustration at Utah State University, and worked in advertising until 1980.

He worked in Los Angeles as a graphic designer and paste-up artist. While there, his creativity flourished and found its focus when he says he learned the "fine art of paper-engineering and pop-up bookmaking" from his mentor and collaborator, James Diaz.

After he created his first book in 1987, How Many Bugs in a Box, Carter relocated to Auburn, California and started creating pop-up books full-time.

Carter says he is passionate about "volunteering as much time as possible, sharing my work with elementary children."

He published an instructional children's book Let's Make it Pop-Up, and his website has several templates and instructional videos to share with would-be paper engineers.

At Saturday's event Carter will give a holiday inspired pop-up craft demonstration, and kids can create their own pop-up craft.
