Saturn At Opposition From Danville: Photo Of The Day

Bob Schiff shared this photo he took of the Ringed Planet at its brightest and closest to Earth.

Saturn was at opposition Saturday and Sunday, meaning it is the closest it ever is to Earth, and is thus brighter and larger than it during other times of the year.

DANVILLE, CA — Patch’s resident astronomer Bob Schiff shared an unusually vivid photo of Saturn at opposition, meaning the Earth was directly between the sun and Saturn when he took the photo from his Danville backyard. Saturn was at opposition Saturday and Sunday, meaning it is the closest it ever is to Earth, and is thus brighter and larger than it during other times of the year.

Not a bad view for a planet 800 million miles away! Saturn will remain visible through February 2024, according to NASA, and on a clear night, you’ll be able to see it through binoculars. You may even be able to observe Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. See here for more information from NASA.

Thanks as always for sharing, Bob!
