Day Four in the 10 Days of Happiness: Write a List of Things That Make you Unhappy & Find Ways to Eliminate Them

Identifying the things that make you unhappy can actually increase your level of happiness. Once you figure out a problem, you are half way to solution.

My grandma used to tell me “If you see a stone coming from a distance, it usually will not go into your eye.” If you write down the things that make you unhappy, it will be easier to come up with solutions.

“If you make a list of all the things that make you unhappy and find the opposite, you will see the solution” says Robin Bundy, a Hypnotherapist, NLP and Reiki practitioner. That was the focus of Day Four in the 10 Days of Happiness; we discussed ways to come up with solutions to the problems of unhappiness.

She said there are as many reasons for unhappiness as there are people.  One of the more frequent courses of unhappiness is stress. A lot of the problems are routed in the subconscious mind and her work as a hypnotherapist helps people get to that level.

Affirming what you want instead of what you don’t want can be very effective in increasing your level of happiness. Another tool is meditation; with practice you can become very good at it and the resulting calming effect can reduce stress and increase your happiness.

Another major course of unhappiness is miscommunication at home, work or play. Making assumptions and filling in the cap in other people’s messages that result in resentment and bad feelings can create unhappiness at home, at work and at play. Dr. Solomon Uwadiale, an executive coach, shared that instead of making assumptions that could lead to misunderstanding in relationships at the work place; you should express your feelings to the other party, that way they can make the necessary corrections to your understanding or lack of it. It is usually that simple.

Lack of appreciation is another reason for unhappiness, whether at home or at work.  Most individuals want to do a great job and contribute to the progress of their companies or relationship, however if they consistently feel unappreciated, that could lead to a lack of motivation, that will lead to lack of performance, that will affect results. Creating an environment that encourages and recognizes individual effort is vital to a healthy home or work place and thereby increases the level of happiness that exists.

Other factors that contribute to your unhappiness include comparing, guilt, regret, anger, fear, frowning, blaming, hate and overall negative attitude. If you focus on the opposite of these factors, you will find that your happiness level will be consistently high.
