Del Mar Will Vote to Support Assault Weapons Ban; City Council Meets Monday [Agenda]
Del Mar City Council will meet at 6 p.m., Feb. 4 at the Del Mar Communication Center at 240 Tenth St.

The city of Del Mar is scheduled to vote Monday evening on a resolution to support Sen. Dianne Feinstein's Senate Bill 150 to ban assault weapons. The resolution comes after community opposition of the Crossroads of the West Gun Show, often referred to as the "Del Mar Gun Show."
Last month, the city approved a resolution that asks the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which manages the fairgrounds, to not renew the Crossroads of the West Gun Show's contract for events in the future.
The show has been under fire since the Sandy Hook Elementary killing spree in Newtown, Conn. In addition, more than 1,100 area residents had signed a petition to support the city’s motion.

City documents state that Senate Bill 150 addresses the millions of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines currently in existence by:
- Requiring a background check on all sales or transfers of a grandfathered assault weapon. This background check can be run through the FBI or, if a state chooses, initiated with a state agency, as with the existing background check system.
- Prohibiting the sale or transfer of large-capacity ammunition feeding devices lawfully possessed on the date of enactment of the bill.
- Allowing states and localities to use federal Byrne JAG grant funds to conduct a voluntary buy-back program for grandfathered assault weapons and largecapacity ammunition feeding devices.
- Imposing a safe storage requirement for grandfathered firearms, to keep them away from prohibited persons.
- Requiring that assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition feeding devices manufactured after the date of the bill’s enactment be engraved with the serial number and date of manufacture of the weapon.
Other agenda items include a resolution urging the Army Corp of Engineers to deny the Clean Water Act permit for the Gregory Canyon Landfill, a resolution regarding the Governance for the Oversight of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, and a presentation of the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
