Wayside Horn System Testing Starts Thursday

The city of Del Mar and the North County Transit District will launch its wayside horn system on Sept. 14. Tests will take place Thursday at 8 a.m. and Sept. 10 through Sept. 14.

The city of Del Mar and the North County Transit District will test the new wayside horn system for trains traveling through Del Mar this week. The program, largely funded by city residents, launches Sept. 14. Testing and calibration starts Thursday at 8 a.m. The horn system will serve as a pilot program for the region.

A wayside horn system is angled speakers fixed at crossings that focus sound towards approaching traffic. Currently train horns blasts multidirectional sounds as they pass through crossings. The city explained that with wayside horns, conductors only sound the horns in dangerous or emergency situations.

Testing will occur during the following times and dates:

  • Sept. 6 at 8 a.m. – The sound levels will be tested and calibrated to meet Federal Railroad Administrative requirements.
  • Sept. 10-14 –The system will be tested and regular sounding of train horns will be used.
  • Sept. 15 at 11:01 a.m. – The system will be fully implemented.
