Update on Saturday's I-80 Crash: Nevada Woman Suffered Severe Head Injuries

CHP says the woman swerved to avoid a Suisun City motorist who made a lane change.

A Nevada woman suffered severe head injuries in a rollover crash on westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Fairfield on Saturday afternoon when another vehicle allegedly made an unsafe lane change, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Bonnie Grant, 70, of Silver Springs, Nevada, was driving a 2004 Ford Escape just east of Waterman Boulevard around 1:05 p.m. when a 2009 Hyundai Veracruz SUV driven by 53-year-old Michael Hudson, of Suisun City, drove from the far left lane into the next lane over, CHP officials said.

Grant swerved to the right to avoid a collision, lost control of her car and struck the center median, causing the Ford to overturn, CHP Officer Chris Parker said.

Several witnesses stopped at the scene and Grant was lying outside of her car when CHP officers arrived, Parker said.

Grant and 64-year-old Luke Linich of Silver Springs were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred and the car’s airbags deployed, Parker said.

Grant, who suffered severe injuries, and Linich, who suffered minor injuries, were taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vacaville, according to Parker.

Hudson, whose car did not make contact with the Ford, was not cited for any traffic violations, CHP Sgt. Mike Lehman said.
