New Math Activity Centers Open at SCC Vallejo, Vacaville Sites
The facilities are designed for use by students needing help from faculty and tutors, or meeting for group sessions.

Solano Community College (SCC) has opened two new Math Activity Centers (MAC) at its Vallejo and Vacaville Center locations.
This effort, along with many others, derive from implementation of the Superintendent-President’s Completion Agenda, in an effort to increase student retention and graduation rates.
The MAC is a place where students taking math classes go to receive help from faculty and tutors on the materials taught in math classes. Additionally, the students can work as a group to solve problems and perform peer tutoring to become more proficient.

Dr. Jowel Laguerre, SCC Superintendent-President stated, “Math is a key area in community colleges that affect students in many disciplines as most, if not all, have math requirements. Our commitment is to help students succeed, therefore, implementing the MAC is a step in the right direction as we continue to increase our students’ success rates in all disciplines.”
The first MAC at SCC on the Fairfield Campus was created with the help of Retired Math Professor and now SCC Board President, A. Marie Young. Math activities at the Vallejo and Vacaville Centers have been room sharing with English and the Library, resulting in limited hours and access for math students; therefore, the project was initiated to find new space for the MAC.

The new centers are made possible by many hard-working faculty/staff/administrators, including Professors Randy Robertson, Genele Rhoads and Kheck Sengmany; Sal Abbate, Dani Gonzalez, Doug Pierce, Deans Marie Morinec, Jerry Kea and John Yu; IT Director Kimo Calilan, CTO Roger Clague, Facilities Director Dwight Calloway and VP Diane White.
“The Board is very pleased with the work the District put into this initiative. Supporting students is Solano’s mission,” shared SCC Board President. “Having retired from teaching Mathematics, I personally understand the struggle many students have with understanding and retaining math concepts, so development of the MAC in the Centers delights me. We want every student to become more proficient in the subject!”
