What a year it has been.
Coronavirus. Wildfires. The election. Racial injustice. Economic hardship.
2020 has challenged us perhaps more than ever before in the City’s history. We mourn with those across the nation who have lost loved ones this year.
We cannot change what has happened, but we must look ahead with hope that the days and months ahead will be brighter. This is also a time to acknowledge and celebrate those who stepped up to be of service in the face of adversity and made a difference in our City.
Thank you to the City Council, staff and partner agencies who have helped to provide a lifeline for struggling local businesses so they can remain afloat throughout shelter in place. Every takeout order, every grant application, and every dollar spent in Dublin helps to ensure the well-being of our local economy and small business owners for years to come.
Thank you to those who served in the Emergency Operations Center at the onset of COVID-19. Your dedication and hard work kept residents informed and helped coordinate local response efforts.
Thank you to the staff and volunteers who safely provided meals and resources for seniors in need. Older adults are among the most vulnerable amidst this pandemic, and your commitment to service when our community needed it most is greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the men and women of the Dublin Police Services who kept us safe and facilitated peaceful demonstrations in the wake of the horrific death of George Floyd. Your dedication to protecting the people of Dublin and building strong relationships with the community are part of what makes this City a welcoming place for all to call home.
Lastly, thank you to the community. You have persevered through an incredibly challenging time. Your generosity in providing personal protective equipment for our first responders and your contributions to local non-profits in desperate need of resources was inspiring.
As we step into the New Year, the challenges we face persist but there is also an incredible amount of hope with a vaccine on the near horizon. May we all find solace in knowing that when we experienced unprecedented hardship, the community came together in service of others.
On behalf of the Dublin City Council and from all of us at the City of Dublin, we thank you and wish everyone a Happy (and safe) New Year.
Linda Smith
