Danville Councilmember Karen Stepper Says She Won't Seek Re-Election After 24 Years
"It has truly been life-changing to meet so many people who love Danville as much as I do," Stepper said.

DANVILLE, CA — Danville Councilmember Karen Stepper said she will not seek re-election at the end of her current term, closing out 24 years on the Danville Town Council when her term ends in December 2026. The announcement marks the latest chapter in a public career in Danville and the San Ramon Valley that began in 1979.
Stepper was first elected to the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board in 1979, and was a member for nine years. She later joined the Town Council in 2002 and served as mayor five times, most recently in 2024. Her work over the years has focused on infrastructure projects, historic preservation and community service.
“It has truly been life-changing to meet so many people who love Danville as much as I do,” Stepper said in a town statement. “I have always said that a great day in Danville is one where I meet someone new, welcome a visitor from another city or state, or have the chance to share all the things that make our Town so special — museums, community events, parks, local shops and restaurants, the Veterans Memorial Building, our sports fields, and of course, the Fourth of July Parade.”

During Stepper's time on the council, she helped advance numerous local initiatives and community projects, including the campaign to rebuild the Veterans Memorial Building, development of new Town offices, and improvements to local parks and playgrounds.
She also held regional leadership roles with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, Southwest Area Transportation Committee, Traffic, the Contra Costa Mayor's Conference, the San Ramon Valley Historical Society and Museum SRV. She also worked with the East Bay Radio Emergency Communications Board and the San Ramon Valley Exchange National Service Club Board.

She is a retired certified public accountant and has lived in Danville with her husband, Tony, since 1974. The couple raised their two children in town, and both coached in Mustang Soccer League. Stepper was a longtime coach, served as president of the league, and received the Steppers’ Plaque for Lifetime Commitment from Mustang Soccer.
“Serving this Town has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am deeply grateful for the friendships, support, and shared commitment to this community that I have experienced along the way,” Stepper said.
Her current Town Council term concludes in December 2026. Vice Mayor Robert Storer's seat is also up for re-election.
