Dublin Police Going Back To Black And White Patrol Cars

One of the newest additions to the fleet was on display in the recent St. Patrick's Day parade.

DUBLIN, CA — After 36 years of white patrol cars, Dublin police will slowly replace their fleet with traditional black and white vehicles. Police officials said they anticipate that by the end of the year, they nearly half of the fleet will have been replaced. Within three years, officials anticipate all of the vehicles will be replaced.

Police said the color scheme will be easier to see.

"Studies have shown that the alteration of light and dark colors increase the visibility of the vehicle in both high and low lighting," police told Patch.

In 2008, the nearby Pleasanton Police Department made the switch to the traditional color scheme for similar reasons.

"Through attrition, the remaining marked patrol vehicles will be changed over to black and white," police said. "The vehicles are being purchased through our internal service funds, which budgets the replacement of marked patrol vehicles on a three year rotation. At this time, we are not converting any current vehicles to black and white, just converting as new vehicles come into the fleet."

Police will also enjoy a new building in about 18 months. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Dublin earlier this month to celebrate the beginning of the construction of the new station. Dublin Police Services will be located at 6361 Clark Avenue in Dublin.
