Letter to the Editor: Michael Utsumi Wants you to Vote Yes on E

One parent says a proper learning environment is our responsibility.

Dear Editor:

I wish to express my support of the passage of Measure E to support all Dublin schools. My position comes from a purely practical standpoint.

Public education is largely funded through property taxes.  With the economic and housing downturn initiated in 2008, Average Daily Attendance (ADA) funding in our schools has declined for four consecutive years.

This has placed immense pressure on ALL school districts throughout California.  The Dublin Unified School District is not alone in this fight.

On June 5th, there will be 25 statewide school bond elections on the ballot – 11 in the Bay Area. Why is this happening?

It is occurring because of the combination of the steady decline in funding and aging facilities. In the same way that one would not allow their home to fall into disrepair, we must act to preserve a healthy environment for a future generation of learners.

No school district is immune from the current financial pressures. I became aware of a middle school in Solano County that is slated to be closed in June.  The reason for this closure is both diminishing enrollment and their school wide API score sits at 694 – far below the state mandated goal of 800.

In contrast, DUSD is a growing district and the aggregate API has grown to 884.

One of the highest performing school districts in California is Cupertino Union.  Guess what? They have a $200 Million bond measure on the June ballot. They are proposing it for precisely the same reasons as Dublin Unified.

My child has enjoyed eight years of instruction by talented and motivated staff.  Even after she graduates from Dublin High School in five years, there will be a generation of students that will succeed her.

It will be our responsibility to ensure them a proper learning environment.
