Students Get a Visit From "Mr. Garbage"

Local elementary schools got a visit from a special guest who taught them about recycling.

- Information received from Brad Vereen, Energy Education Manager,
Dublin Unified School District

The man known as "Mr. Garbage" recently visited and for a fun assembly to kick off recycling initiatives.

John Hanscom of ESA Renewable Resources, known as Mr. Garbage, led the students in an interactive training session to learn how to sort recyclables in the cafeteria, the classroom and at home.

Between the two campuses, 967 students participated in four assemblies.

The presentations were funded by a grant from the Altamont Landfill Settlement, with the assistance of AVI Recycling Coordinator Mr. Jesse Tieger, and Assistant to the City Manager, Mr. Roger Bradley.

The presentations are a part of a broad, long-term program to increase diversion and promote green practices throughout the district. The goal is to have recycling presentations in each elementary site this fall so that the students can bring these behaviors to the middle/high schools as they grow, and of course share what they learned at home.
