With only a few days left until the election and more political noise than ever, I’d like to take a moment, pause, and just say two words: “Thank You.”

I can’t help but look back with deep gratitude and exuberant joy on the 18 incredible years you have allowed me to serve you in our community. What an honor to serve our schools, our neighborhoods, and you personally.

Every day throughout these years, I’ve kept my “Why” at the forefront of my mind. It is easy to get swept up in the day to day (especially in campaign season)—which makes daily reminding myself of my “Why” that much more important. And today I’d like to share that “Why” with you.

My “Why” has always been, and always will be my family. When my daughters entered grade school, the thought of standing idly by rather than ensuring each of them—Katelyn, Courtney, and Karissa—received the best education possible was simply not an option.

You first welcomed me as a volunteer on my daughter’s School Site Council. I am so glad you did, because you allowed me to be that much more hands-on in my girls’ education. That is a gift not every parent is afforded.

As I became more involved in our local schools, I saw many ways we could improve our school district. You elected me to sit on and lead our School Board. Thank you, because here the meaning of my family grew to include every teacher, student, parent, coach, custodian, and principal in each of our schools.

During those 10 years I served on the School Board, not only did we not lay off a single teacher due to budget cuts, but we increased our API scores every single year. I now have the honor of teaching other school leaders how to improve their districts.

When you elected me to City Council and Mayor, my meaning of family continued to grow. It meant providing award-winning affordable housing to worthy veterans in our community. It meant leaving each fiscal year with no debt and no unfunded pension liabilities for every taxpayer in our family. It meant gifting land valued at $70 million to a new school instead of developers—the first time to happen in California history. You allowed me to serve you in these ways, and for that I am so grateful.

Now, there’s a chance the family will grow again county-wide. So will the challenges: the ongoing pandemic, restoring the local economy, the homelessness crisis, improving transportation, and much more.

I still can’t just sit idly by. You and this wonderful community have truly become my family, and it is my mission to ensure you receive the best county services and leadership possible.

It’s my sincere hope that you will join some of my supporters—Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, the Alameda County Firefighters, Laborers, Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern, State Senator Steve Glazer, and more—in casting your vote once again for me on November 3rd, 2020.

But even if you don’t, my gratitude for you, the opportunity to serve you, and my commitment to family and my “Why,” remain the same.

Thank you,

David Haubert
