TRI-VALLEY TRIUMPH: Dublin & Pleasanton Unite in Massive Flag Retirement Drive

DUBLIN & PLEASANTON, CA — In a spectacular display of regional solidarity, the Old Glory Retirement Drive 2026 has made history across the Tri-Valley. Spearheaded by the visionary leadership of Nithilan Balasubramanian, an exemplary Star Scout from Scouts BSA Troop 908, this monumental project powerfully united the Dublin and Pleasanton communities, mobilizing residents, veterans, and youth to honor the American flag and our nation's heroes.

The ambitious initiative set out with two profound goals: providing a dignified avenue to retire worn American flags, and unleashing a massive wave of gratitude toward veterans through deeply personal, handwritten letters.

Thanks to the unwavering support of Mr. Scott David Johnson, Chartered Organization Representative for Troop 908, Saint Clare Episcopal Church served as the central drop-off headquarters.

The Heartbeat of the Drive: Youth in Action

The drive quickly evolved into an inspiring masterclass in civic duty. Volunteers and Scouts dedicated countless hours to creating 250 heartfelt letters of appreciation, chosen to commemorate America's 250th birthday and honor 250 veterans for their unwavering dedication, service and sacrifice to our nation.

In a sacred Scout tradition, each letter was packaged with a profoundly symbolic, respectfully retired piece of an American flag, the embroidered star, painstakingly saved before the flag’s formal retirement, serving as a tangible token of eternal gratitude.

Inspirational Leadership

A premier debt of gratitude belongs to Steve Thompson, Commander, Navy, VFW Post 6298, who generously donated retired flags and championed the project from day one. His lifelong dedication to preserving the dignity of Old Glory served as a towering beacon of inspiration across the region.

Under Nithilan’s phenomenal leadership, the elite Scouts of Troop 908 masterfully coordinated complex cross-city logistics and recruited an army of volunteers. What started as a focused service project rapidly exploded into a sweeping, regional phenomenon of pure patriotism.
