📰 News we're reading

• El Cerrito seniors want their center back. The city says funding is the challenge (mercurynews.com) — El Cerrito seniors are pressing the city to restore a dedicated senior center, saying scattered programs at the community center and churches don't replace the social hub they lost eight years ago. City officials agree on the need but cite tight finances, competing capital projects like a new library and public safety building, and limited space as obstacles while they explore expanding current senior programming.

• Flock Backlash Fuels Broader Debate Over Mass Surveillance (ccpulse.org) — El Cerrito is highlighted as the first Contra Costa city to fully drop Flock's license plate reader cameras, a move panelists cite as a win for anti-surveillance organizers. The broader discussion in San Francisco examines data-sharing risks, fusion centers, and how residents can pressure local councils and courts to curb mass surveillance while exploring community-based safety alternatives.
