Local Sub Joint Serves Killer "Jersey Style" Subs!
Suntan City San Diegan’s have the best of just about everything. From the best waves in the world to some of the best restaurants in town. With that said, it’s sometimes hard to pick a place to eat, with so many choices.
I was in the mood for some type of sandwich today, but I was not sure. I thought about my options based on where I was at the moment, and suddenly it hit me; a big fatt meatball sandwich is exactly what my fatt little face craved. So there I was, on 5 North, exiting Lomas Santa Fe Road. I pulled into the shopping center just East of the 5 in the Big 5 Sporting Goods parking lot.

Tucked in the corner next to a bagel shop, I found Jersey Mike’s Subs. Now when I think of a sub shop, I think about a cold sub filled with fresh meats, so I was not sure if they even had hot sandwiches or even a meatball sandwich for that matter.
I walked into this place to find upbeat Bruce Springsteen music playing, and a sense of employee/customer interaction. These super friendly sandwich gurus were putting on a show, and didn’t even know it. It was truly refreshing to see a sandwich joint make these babies with such enthusiasm. Go watch these guys!

I ordered the #15 which their menu describes as “Melted provolone, tomato sauce and parmesan cheese over our famous meatballs. Try it for a change of pace. We’re sure you’ll come back for another”. Will we?
OK, you gotta remember I used to own a pizza joint. I not only served, but made my own meatballs and sauce. How are these guys going to satisfy an Italian food connoisseur?
This Meatball Fantasy was stupid! My first bite was absolutely self gratifying! The mesh of their fresh bread with the most tender meat mounds that absolutely melted in my mouth was crazy! The gravy (sauce) had a mild tangy flavor, and was a great flavorful mesh, with the provolone and parmesan cheeses. The melt on the cheese was great. As crazy as it sounds, the melted cheeses gave off a slight texture as if I was eating a cheese rubber band. The bread was fresh and flaky just like back home.
Have we talked about the meatballs yet? Of course not, let’s leave the best for last. These mounds of beauty melted in my mouth. There was no doubt these puppies were made fresh everyday. The sandwich was fantastic, but I wanted to taste the meatballs by themselves; and I did. Again, the meatballs alone were butter! Don’t forget to add chips and try their tasty cakes.
I have to hand it to these guys who offer a good variety of sandwiches from their Original Italian to their Buffalo Chicken Wraps.
So give the place that opened a small shop in the sea-side town of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, back in 1956 a try!
Cheers!
