4 Injured After Car Crashes Into Encinitas Trader Joe’s

BREAKING: An 87-year-old female driver hit four pedestrians at the entrance to the store.

ENCINITAS, CA – Four women were injured when a car crashed into an Encinitas store Thursday, according to officials.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. at the Trader Joe’s grocery store at 115 N. El Camino Real. When deputies arrived, they discovered an 87-year-old female driver had hit four pedestrians at the entrance to the store with her 2002 Honda Accord.

"The driver told the deputies she had been trying to back out of a parking space after leaving the store," Sgt. Joe Tomaiko said in a statement. "She had confused the gas pedal for the brake and accelerated backward into the four women, whose ages ranged from early 50s to late 80s."
